ibook This week I made the switch from PC to Mac. No this isn’t a belated April Fool’s - I am now the proud owner of a brand new iBook. Now admittedly I do still own a PC and I had already started the move towards Apple when I bought an iPod, but this is still a major change for me.

I decided to switch for a number of reasons:

  1. I wanted a new laptop that was truly portable. My Dell Latitude laptop has been a trusty companion for many a year now, but is beginning to show it’s age: the battery doesn’t hold it’s charge properly, some of the keys work only sporadically and it’s not the speediest of machines.
  2. I wanted to try out OS X. I had long admired an operating system that could combine “the power of UNIX with the simplicity and elegance of the Macintosh”.
  3. I wanted to be able to test on a Mac the web sites and Firefox customizations that I develop.

With these requirements in mind I decided to go for a 12” iBook with 640MB of memory. I went back and forth between an iBook and a PowerBook, but eventually decided that the extra cost of the PowerBook was just not worth it for what I needed.

I have had the iBook for a few days now and I am loving it. It is small, portable, quick enough for my needs and OS X is quite simply a joy to use. I am still getting used to it having never used a Mac in earnest before, but overall I am extremely happy.

Congratulations!

iBooks are just great! Mine is alredy one year old, and so far
it has been very reliable and fun to use. I mainly use Linux on it, but
even if I don’t get the adventages of the OSX/Apple hardware combo
it is worth it. Great battery capacity, light, compact. It is my favourite computer so far!

Excellent! I lugged a thinkpad around for a few years and would never go back now that I have my powerbook.

Do yourself another favor and give LaunchBar or Quicksilver a try.
