This is what it must have felt like if you were a Bayern Munich supporter on that infamous night in Barcelona. Of course that night I was rooting for a Manchester United victory and the excitement and drama of two injury time goals was unbelievable. Yesterday, the situation was reversed as England gave up two injury time goals to lose to France 2-1 in the European Championship. I have not felt this disappointed after an England performance since the defeat to Germany in Euro 96.

There is one big difference to both of those other games though - in those games the losing side was out of the competition whereas England must now pick themselves back up for the final two games in the group. Neither Croatia or Switzerland looked particularly impressive in their opening game and England should go in expecting to win both matches.

We also must take some positives from the game. We played reasonably well and were close to beating arguably the best team in the world, and if we are to progress in the tournament we would not face the French again until the final. Let’s hope we can have some better luck for Thursday’s game against Switzerland…
