Web Developer Beta 1.1

Web Developer Beta 1.1 — a preview release of the next version of the Web Developer extension — is now publicly available. This release is for testing purposes only — for a fully supported version of the extension or localized builds please see the latest official release.

The full list of new features in this release is in the changelog, but the biggest change is the replacement of the sidebar with something I am calling the “dashboard”.

Dashboard

The dashboard provides similar functionality to the sidebar in that it allows content to be displayed without hiding the page for features like ‘Edit CSS’ and ‘Edit HTML’. However, because it is a custom component it can now be used in Mozilla and Seamonkey (as well as still supporting Firefox and Flock), docked to any side of the screen and supports using multiple sidebar features at the same time through the use of tabs. For example, you can now ‘Edit CSS’ and ‘Edit HTML’ on the same page at the same time.

Clearly, this is a major change so it is still a little buggy — particularly the user interface — but I am hoping to tidy it up before the final release.

Feedback

As a beta release this build is not guaranteed to be stable and does contain some known issues. The idea behind this beta release is to give people the opportunity to provide feedback about this next version as well as report any bugs. Please report any feedback or bugs in the beta forum or via the contact form.

    Hi,

This is sure a moment to congratulate you on this fine piece of software: I’ve been using it whenever I had to do some web coding.

In the ‘About’ the program reports it’s version 1.0.2 — the one I had installed before. This is even true after uninstalling the 1.0.2 extension and installing the beta. (Yes, and closing and restarting Seamonkey.) — What’s happening here?

    Kind regards,
    R Nick

  3. Yay! Firefox 2 compatibility! Chris, you are the man.

  4. nixs — The about dialog has definitely been updated so I’m not sure why you are not seeing the right version. My only suggestion would be to try it under a new profile.

    Nice work!
I have only these little problems:

    - the crtl + shift + key combo doesn’t work (it doesn’t work in the 1.0.2 as well) or works only sometimes… I use it often, and I have always to enable things from menu.…

    - the alternate text on menu items (not menu title button) always displays the last alternate text displayed before somewere in the toolbars.
For example: place the mouse pointer on reload button and wait for alt text appear (it say ‘reload current page’). Now open the Forms menu (or some other menu) and place the mouse pointer over Display Form Details. It displays ‘reload current page’ .

    - The icons seems to have lost quality (maybe my impression)

I’m using FF 2.0 on linux.

  6. vola:

    - Most likely this is the issue described in the FAQ. Otherwise the keyboard shortcuts are all handled by the browser so it would be a problem there and not with the extension.

    - Please see this forum post.

    - I am not a graphic designer so the icons are just whatever I can hack together. You are free to theme the extension if you wish.

    Hm. Re-downloaded, re-installed: disco!
    Thanks, Chris.

The icons are ok, I said only they have less quality, like in an high compression jpeg… (but I’ts only my impression)
