Google Chrome

Chris -- first, I LOVE your Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox.  When I first started using it years ago, it literally revolutionized how I develop web sites.  I've been at this since 1995, but the ability to dynamically change CSS and HTML in the browser, and see the effects in real time is tantamount to discovering fire.  How was life possible without it?

Thank you!

My Question is -- do you have any plans to create a version for Google Chrome?

In a few weeks Google will release version 4, which has support for Add-Ons.  It's already available in nightly and beta builds of the browser.  Having your toolbar available in Chrome would be fantastic.

I still like Firefox, but lately it's just become too unstable.  On a Mac at least, it hangs up, struggles with Flash, and at times, it's so slow it's painful.

That may be the fault of some of the add-ons, not Firefox itself, but the net is an painful experience at times.

Chrome is less polished, but much faster and easy to use.

Perhaps that's because there are no Add-Ons to drag it down.  We'll see.

Either way, I hope you'll cast and eye toward Chrome and give some thought to a port.  I'm sure it would be a lot of work, but perhaps it may be worthwhile.  I know that I would make a donation to support the effort.

What does everyone else think?

Re: Google Chrome

It's certainly on my radar, but it basically means writing an entirely new extension from scratch since everything is different under Chrome.

I may take a look and see how easy I can get something up and running and look into sharing some code between the two versions of the extension, but it's not something that is likely to be super mature in the near future.

Re: Google Chrome

That makes sense.  As a developer myself, I know how a simple request like "port it to Chrome" actually means a TON of hours of work.

I'm glad to hear it's on your radar though.

Keep up the great work!

Re: Google Chrome

Hi Chris,

I registered to firstly say thank you for the developer toolbar. It really has been a fantastic resource for myself and all my colleagues over the years. It's pretty remarkable how many people I work with that all have it in use!

Secondly I wanted to add my support to the idea of a version for Chrome. I can honestly say that the only thing keeping Firefox 3.5 on my machine is your toolbar. I would switch to Chrome permanently if the dev toolbar was made available, and I'm not alone in this sentiment.

Thanks again and here's hoping for a Chromed future!

Re: Google Chrome

actually...web developer and firebug are the ones keeping me using firefox.  Firebug is already on the move, so let us know if we can help with something.
Maybe you want to open a Google Code project and a discussion group...thats a start.

Re: Google Chrome

Hello,

I have made a chrome extension with "some" extended developer tools for Chrome.
Check it out: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/de … iiccpmjfdi

I would like to add that a firefug clone is already available in Google Chrome, this is
"Developer Tools" (Ctrl+Shift+I). You can edit cookies, localStorage
(HTML5), highlight elements, edit css in live and so on.

My extension (named pendule) is a beginning, I'm working hard to add new
features that aren't already in the "Developer tools".

Ha!  It's funny that you say this.  Since I made my original post last month, I've gotten to the same point.  I use Chrome almost exclusively on my Mac now.  The only time I start up Firefox is when I need to use the toolbar.

Perhaps we see a trend developing?
