Mozilla Update Relaunched

Mozilla Update finally relaunched this weekend and the Developers Control Panel was turned on as part of this release.

This allows me to administrate my extensions and make sure that the information is current, so I have uploaded the latest versions of both the User Agent Switcher and Web Developer extensions. These updates still go into a moderation queue before appearing on the site, but hopefully that will only take a few days.

If you want the latest news about my extensions this site is still the best place to check out, but it will be nice to have the official extensions site up-to-date as well.

  1. the update icon popped up for me both here (winXP Pro) and at work (Win2k Pro), I updated User Agent Switcher in both places.

No problems at work, it crippled firefox here at home. I could tell it was dying while loading the extentions (I’ve experienced this before) and it happened right after the update, so I started Firefox in safe mode and uninstalled UserAgentSwitcher, closed Firefox, then reinstalled from your site and everything is fine again.

You said in a previous post that you should uninstall the old version before installing the new version, is that still the case? If so, does Mozilla Update do that automatically?

  2. Yes, it is required if you are upgrading from a version older than 0.6.4 and no Mozilla Update does not do that automatically.

See the FAQ for more information.

  3. Is there a way to check for a certain version before suggesting the auto update? If not, then any user who missed the last update (due to it not being in Moz’s auto update), is going to have a borken browser after they do the update, which is suggested without warning.

I assume that most people who this would effect have already gone through the process by now, but for other extension developers in the future, Moz probably needs to add a feature like this if it doesn’t already exist. It is another one of those “not quite ready for prime time” problems that keeps me from suggesting my aunt use Firefox.
