I am pleased to announce the release of Web Developer 0.1 for Google Chrome. The extension is available for download on the Google Chrome extension gallery.
As the version number suggests this is an early stage build of the extension for Chrome that I wanted to release quickly to elicit feedback.
As such, there are a few missing features from the Web Developer extension for Firefox, particularly those that require custom interface elements like ‘Edit CSS’ as these need to be rewritten to integrate fully into the browser. Some of the more complicated features as well as configuration options like keyboard shortcuts are also not included in this initial release, but these will be coming soon in future updates.
One feature that unfortunately is missing is ‘Disable JavaScript’ as this is not possible to implement with the current Google Chrome APIs. Please star this bug and hopefully the APIs will be updated.
I haven’t had a chance to upload the source for the extension yet, but I should have something up (most likely on GitHub) soon and will post a link to the repository when I do. Please post any issues or feedback in the Chrome section of the forums.

This was the only plugin that was stopping me from regularly using Chrome
Agreed! We would love to make chrome our default browser but need this plugin working to make the switch for our company. Make sure you contribute $$$ to this project like we did so Chris can keep working on this. You know he has made your lives easier. It’s saved us hours of work over the past year, so we gladly contributed some of that money he helped us save to what made it all possible.

THANKS!
Same here! I just discovered its existence, and am now ready to make the switch to Chrome as my default browser. Thank you, Chris!
Exactly the same for me. Good work! I already use your early version and will report bugs to support your great work.
Well Done Chris!
Finally chris! now i can use Chorme.! sigh
very awesome, thanks!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
My missing favorite plugin!
Great Job Chris!
It’s nice to see the growing number of Chrome developer extensions
YOU’RE A LEGEND CHRIS! Thanks so much for this.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!! Look forward to future releases.
btw, bug starred. Everyone who cares about this issue should do so also: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=37762
Is it really better than Pendule?
Was looking forward to this one too
Although it appears to have installed OK, it’s not behaving for me on Mac (Snow Leopard). When I press the cog, the options appear, and clicking on the headings (e.g. Images) reveals the sub-items. Clicking on those sub items (e.g. Hide Background Images) has no effect on the page but the appearance of the item toggles/changes (as in goes bold/unbold). Hope this helps
Make sure you refresh any pages after installing the extension to get the extension code loaded onto those pages. Note: I do all my development and testing on Snow Leopard so the extension should work on the Mac.
That worked, Chris. Syooper stuff
I know you said that you don’t check the comments on the Chrome extensions gallery. Don’t know if this is the right place to suggest it but if you have room on Chrome’s toolbar, you might try this notifier extension, which can help keep track of new comments and ratings.

No, I’m not the author.
Ah, thanks — it looks perfect for keeping track of new comments over there.
There is an extension from the offical firebug team: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/bmagokdooijbeehmkpknfglimnifench really good!
WOOO HOOO! Can’t wait to try it out.
thanks very much?
Fantastic!
This looks even better the the Firefox version.
Thanks for working on this! Unfortunately I will have to continue to use the Firefox version for now as the number one tool I use is the edit css. Hope to see that feature added soon. Thanks again!
Thanks Chris — this is excellent news. I look forward to seeing the toolbar continue to grow.
The two key features I’d like to lobby for are:
1. Edit CSS
2. Edit HTML
Those are the two most useful features in the Firefox version, and if Chrome had them as well, it would make web development under Chrome A LOT easier.
Keep up the great work, and put a donate button somewhere on the site so we can reward you for the effort!
I’m working on ‘Edit CSS’ right now and it will be in the next release. ‘Edit HTML’ is a little trickier, but I’m going to see if I can implement that too.
And the donate page is here:

you definetely deserve a donation right now!
I just noticed that in webdeveloper 1.1.8 in Firefox 3.6.2 the + and minus tabs, for juggling lists, are not working, e.g.
– under CSS -> view CSS, all the stylesheets are “open” and cannot be closed
– under Information -> View document size, all of the categories (e.g. images) are “closed” and cannot be opened.
Today I noticed webdeveloper had disappeared from the toolbar and when I checked under Tools -> add-ons, there was a notice that it would updated when FF restarted. But it’s still 1.1.8.
Is it just me?
This is a blog post about Web Developer for Chrome so it’s not the right place for issues with the Firefox version of the extension. Please post your questions in the forums and you’ll find some of your questions have already been answered.
Thank you so much for working on this! I am especially looking forward to the cookie editing functionality.
Keep up the good work!
Great!
Thks
Awsome work! Thank you very much!
Chris, do you have any idea why your link to the extension in the beginning of the article might bring this in Chrome — http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6259/screenshot20100407at910.png
This has been the case for several weeks already and I have the latest Chrome Dev version installed on 10.6.3.
The link easily opens in Safari, though.
Sorry — I missed this comment before — but no, I don’t know why this would be happening. It’s a regular link so there should be no reason why it’s consistently not working for you.
Thanks
Im just missing the Disbale cache feature.
Is that possible currently in Chrome ?
Unfortunately, just like ‘Disable JavaScript’, Chrome does not expose a way to implement this.
Thanks.
google chorome problem not work “view image information”
good work!
Waiting for the release that includes shortcuts… but awesome stuff Chris…
Chris, the 4 items I use the most and use daily in Web Developer Toolbar on FF are Edit CSS, Edit HTML, Display Element Information and Display Ruler. None of them appear to be present in the Chrome version.
SO I cannot switch to Chrome.
I’ve been getting Web Developer Toolbar to work with FF3.6 by uninstalling and reinstalling it after I reboot/restart FF itself and that has gotten me past the Web Developer Toolbar is incompatible with FF3.6 message. Until today.
Today, the FF Addon install process itself is stopping dead in its tracks when I select Web Developer Toolbar and refusing to re-install it.
Please, please, please do whatever you can to help solve this problem. I know it’s not of your creation and is FF’s fault but I don’t know what else to do.
If there is a specific person or group or place in FF’s organization that all the web developer toolbar users could write to about this issue, please tell us what it is.
‘Edit CSS’ was added in version 0.2 that was released yesterday and I’m working to port over all the features as quickly as I have time.
I also am hoping to fix the Firefox issue as soon as possible, but am extremely busy right now. It is a high priority though and I hope to look into it soon.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate the response. I’ll check out the Chrome version 0.2.
I love Chrome since the first i use it. And now your jobs make it more powerful … Great works! thanks Chris..
Web developer on Chrome is nice, thank you Chirs.
But what with this browser trend: “Oh-oh, I am dying to SWITCH to Chrome, please-please-make-it-possible”
Chromium is fast? Hell yes! it is as fast as a cheeseburger I order in a fast food.
- flashy wrapping paper
– junk food inside
Firefox is slow? Hell yes! It’s as slow as a good meal cooked in a good restaurant.
- starter
– main dish
– desert
So live quick, live cheap and die miserably (Using Google fast-food application).
You will all return for Firefox 4.0 with similar arguments… Committing people are dead.…
Long live Debian + FF + Web Developer
Very nice… thanks for building this. I use chrome and FF, and its really nice to see some of these plugins mature in the chrome side.
Cheers.
