Web Developer 1.1.3

Version 1.1.3 of the Web Developer extension has been released. This is another patch release containing what I hope are the last major issues that were discovered in the previous version. With the major issues resolved this version has also been uploaded to Firefox Add-ons.

For this version Display Element Information (Ctrl+Shift+F) doesn’t display any info

  2. Ionut, it works for me. What’s new is that you have to click on an element before it displays the information. I think this makes it much easier to use as the menu isn’t “jumpy” all the time.

  3. Ionut Cioflan says:

Thank you Jerome, I’ve just discovered that I have to click the elements :)

  4. Thanks Chris! I love the Web Developer Toolbar, use it daily, and frequently force it on people. :)

    Nice job!
    Eric

  5. Dustin says:

This is a great extension. Is there a way so that when you edit the CSS file it will display vertically instead of horizontally along the bottom? I really liked that in the last version. It made it easier to see more of the page and CSS file at the same time.

  6. Dustin — Just click the ‘Position’ button in the dashboard to move it to any side of the screen.

  7. Emile says:

The new version of W D rocks… great work! keep on bringing those updates :)

  8. kalikiana says:

With today’s update the class names are displayed in an extra toolbar and not in the status bar which is a waste of space for me. So please change that back or include an option for it.

  9. AWI says:

Well done, Chris, you have obviously worked hard on Web Developer in January, and you have managed to improve what was already the best Add-on for Firefox (IMHO).
    AWI

  10. Richard says:

Thanks for such a great extension — it is one of my primary firefox add-ons.

One question, is there a way to enable the “Disable -> All Javascript” option with one-click or with a hotkey combination. There are so many annoying websites, that I find the need to use this feature very frequently…:-)

  11. Antonio A. says:

    Great version!
Only, remember that ‘Display Element Information’ exhibit a quite different behaviour, compared with former versions: you have to click on the element to investigate to find out its Element Information.
After that, information remains displayed until you click a different element.

  12. Dave says:

    Hi,

really love the new version, btw: nice new icons!

The feature I miss is a resize function, that resizes the viewport to optimal size (means no scrollbars, at least no verticals).

I couldn’t keep on developing without Web Developer Toolbar, I really appreciate your work!

  13. yser says:

    very good. thanks!

  14. kalikiana — I have no plans to put this back in as it is just more code for me to maintain.

Richard — ‘Add more keyboard shortcuts’ is already on the to-do list.

Dave — I’ll look into this for a future release.

  15. Micah says:

    Great updates in version 1.1.3!
I use this tool bar daily. It is as valuable as any other software I use. I just pay-pal’d you a couple bucks for your efforts. Keep up the good work.

  16. Micah — Thank you for the donation, it is greatly appreciated.

  17. Brendon says:

I never noticed this before, but the “Display Element Information” feature doesn’t seem to work on embedded Flash objects. I don’t see this listed under “known limitations”, however. Is it just me?

  18. Brendon — Flash objects take control of the browser events so I have no way to detect when a mouse move or click occurs. I’ll add it to the known issues list, but it is unlikely to ever be fixed.

  19. J.S. says:

    Thank you, Mr. Pederick

  20. Taz says:

The ‘persist style’ does not work anymore. It has changed from ‘persist style’ to ‘persist feature’, this does nothing for me.

It would be great if you could get that fixed.
By the way I think this extension is the best for FF.

    Cheers.
    T

  21. Taz — ‘Persist Features’ works just as it did before, only the name was changed.

  22. Harrie says:

Strange, “Disable Meta Redirects” does sometimes not work on tabs. It refreshed a page once and then it stopped refreshing as it should. But this isn’t consistent, most of the time it does work nicely. Very weird ..

I’ll do a test with a lot of tabs and see how many of them fail to disable those redirects.

  23. Harrie says:

My last test with 14 tabs failed for all tabs, only the first page didn’t refresh, so it looks like “Disable Meta Redirects” is still broken for tabs.

  24. Harrie — Can we take this to the forums since it is very hard to track conversations in the comments here? Do you have exact steps to reproduce since opening a bunch of tabs and disabling meta redirects seems to work for me.

  25. Christian says:

    Hi

Sorry about my english, i reconize is a great tool but i have a question, the validator of the display page validator not check the iso-8859–1 ?? when i display a word like Ó, à, È, etc the validator give a error, sorry if not the site to a question this

    Un Saludo

    Christian

  26. Harrie says:

Yes, of course, sorry for not going directly to the forums. I’ll make an account for the forum later this evening and will describe my steps taken to reproduce it.

  27. Christian — I’ll look into this and see if I can fix it for a future release.

    Harrie — Thanks, much appreciated.

  28. Christian says:

Thank at all, muchas gracias a todos

  29. Justin Cook says:

    Chris,
love all the new changes, and the updated icons even make a pleasing difference

  30. Harrie says:

    Chris,

Sorry, my bad, I didn’t restart Firefox after I installed Web Developer 1.1.3 (’cause I had to much other tabs open), therefor Disable Meta Redirect didn’t work.

I’m feeling quite stupid now .. I’ll drink some more coffee.

  31. Richard, may I suggest the NoScript extension? Wonderful though WDT is, it’s not the ideal tool for blocking javascript on a site-by-site basis. NoSceript is.

  32. Anonymous says:

When is this likely to be uploaded to Babelzilla so localised versions can be created?

  33. Anonymous — As soon as I get some free time as I am extremely busy with work right now.

  34. Rob Adams says:

    Chris,
This tool is fantastic! I started using it about 6 months ago and used it for a few things here and there. The more I used it, the more features I discovered and honestly, I don’t know how I did my job before loading this extension.

I use the Web Developer tools dozens of times a day now and it has saved me hours and hours of work. I haven’t had a single issue with it (other than with the new version having to reload Firefox because it didn’t recognize the DOM ext. being loaded) and I use it in XP, 2000, Ubuntu and OSX. Thanks so much for your hard work!
    Rob

  35. Michaël says:

    Chris,
I found that your last version of web developer is not fully compatible with the Change v0.0.0.7 add on (but I think it was with v0.0.0.6).
In fact, the validation processes (in tools menu) are freezed by this add on. No online or offline page validation is complete. The first step of validation is OK (buttons appear with OK state or error state), but after clicking on theses buttons to download the W3C page result, the process freezes and no page is loaded.
    Regards
    Mike

  36. Michaël — I am able to run both extensions just fine. My only suggestion would be to try a new profile.

  37. Eric Hanson says:

Interesting tool, however, it would be useful to have a full features list (w/ screenshots), to see what WDT offers that my (or other’s) installed plugins don’t offer (for example WDT vs Firebug). Or did I miss that section?

  38. Eric — I write the extension in my free time so it is very hard for me to find the time to write documentation. This is something I would love to do, but I just do not currently have the time to do it.

  39. Jim Fulmer says:

My favorite part of web app troubleshooting is using Web Developer. Any plans for adding a digital color meter? As a designer that is the only thing on my wish list.

    Thanks.

  40. Jim — The ColorZilla extension already provides this functionality.

  41. Iulian Ghisoiu says:

Cool. Great changes to this version.

  42. Claudine says:

Ça fait maintenant quelques mois que j’utilise l’extension que vous avez créée, et vraiment, je la trouve super, voire même incontournable !! Merci encore !!

  43. Sethva says:

    You, Sir, are my God!
I just discovered this delightfull addon.
    Thank you for making this.

  44. Jason says:

What a terrific add-on. Just downloaded it at work for the first time and will download it at home as well. Thanks.

  45. Antti says:

Just wanted say thanks. Your add-on is great, especially the “outline” option comes extremely handy when doing a layout with css!

  46. Forest says:

Thanks for the great extension. I don’t know how people ever did CSS editing before it…

I was wondering, are there plans to have a detachable CSS editor? The reason is because the CSS editor is probably the #1 thing everyone I know uses, but its capabilities are limited. Detaching it from the window would allow you to edit CSS without reducing the size of the main website you are developing for..

Thanks, The new version has fixed so many bugs for me :)

  47. Forest — Yes, this is something I am looking into for a future release.

  48. ROCKED says:

    Web Developer is great tool!
    Thank You ;-)
