Federico Viticci’s experience with his Synology on the latest episode of Connected matches mine. My volume crashed recently and I just haven’t had the time or inclination to fix it. If the Mac Mini ever gets updated I’ll seriously consider buying one to use as a home server.

@chrispederick I had high hopes for Synology. I replaced our Drobo with one ~2 years ago. The Synology was removed from service in our house about a year ago. I was always having to tweak or fix some setting to keep all the services / features working..

@Burk I’ve had my Drobo 2 connected to a Mac Mini for years now. I’ve actually upgraded the Mini twice but the Drobo has been solid. Will probably get a newer / faster one soon.

@kimonostereo I was definitely much happier with the Drobo+Mac combo over the Synology.

@Burk I don’t think I’d ever be happy with a NAS instead of a real server. Maybe one day they’ll make something that isn’t too underpowered, but so far, this combo has been super dependable.

@kimonostereo @Burk I’ve finally come to the same conclusion. Mac Mini (hopefully an updated version this year) plus external storage seems to be the way to go for me.

@chrispederick @burk I really love how flexible it is. I’m hoping for a new Mac Mini this year too. Hopefully not too stripped down…
